Should I Use My Current Version Of Acrobat Reader? A. As a rule, no. Your Library comes with a special version of the Reader called "Adobe Acrobat Reader Search" The last word is important: "Search" makes it possible to do complex searches of the Library books. Please install the enclosed version. The version provided on this CD-ROM is Adobe Acrobat Reader Search v. 4.05. You can use this version with Mac OS 7.1.2 and above, including Mac OS 9. If your computer is not a PowerPC system (a 68020, 68030 or 68040) then the previous version, version 3.01, will be installed. Version 3.01 will not work with Mac OS 9. Q. How do I start the The Works Of John Owen? A. After your installation is complete, an icon with the title "The Works Of John Owen" (actually an alias of a file on the CD) will appear on your Desktop. When you double-click this icon with the CD-ROM in the CD tray the Touch-And-Go Librarian will open and you will be able to navigate to the various books from there. You may move the icon (ie, the alias) to your Apple Menu Items folder in the System folder if this is more convenient for your use. Q. How do I copy text out of The Works Of John Owen and paste it into a word processor? A. First, choose the Text Selection tool (it's the button on the tool bar with "T" on it, or, if you are using version 3.01, it is the button with "abc" on it). Then highlight the text you want to copy. Next, go to the "Edit" menu and choose "Copy". Now, go to your word processor, go to its "Edit" menu, and choose "Paste". The copied text will then appear. Q. Can I copy more than one page at a time? A. Yes. You will need to turn on continuous page mode by going to the "View" menu and choosing "Continuous". Q. How Do I Copy Graphics? A. (For version 4.05 users:) The Acrobat Reader Guide does not document the Image Select tool. Here is a brief explanation. To copy graphics to the Clipboard: 1) Select the Graphics Select tool. Do this by pressing and holding down the sixth icon, to the right of the magnifying glass. Pull to the right until youÕve chosen the graphics selection tool which is the third item. The cursor changes to the cross-hair icon. 2) Drag a rectangle around the graphic you want to copy. To deselect the graphic and start over, click anywhere outside the selected graphic. 3) Choose Edit > Copy to copy the graphic to the Clipboard. 4) To view the graphic, choose Window > Show Clipboard. The graphic is copied using the WMF (Windows) or PICT (Mac OS) format. Q. I'm experiencing some errors or my Reader won't open. How do I get the Library to work again? A. Although rare on the Mac Platform, certain issues may arise. Check the following: 1) You have too many fonts in the font folder. The limit is 128 suitcases. If you have too many fonts, the symbol font wont be seen by Acrobat (and other programs). Acrobat MUST have the Symbol font to work. Solution: Remove or combine font suitcases (do this with care!) until you have reduced the number of suitcases to below 128. 2) The "ATM Font Database" file (an item that is loose in your system folder) is present and broken. Solution: and must be deleted. (It is not needed with version 3 or 4 of the Reader.) 3) You may be installing with an application running or virus protection on and the installer is choking on something. Solution: Please make sure nothing is running when you run the installer. For best results, using Extension Manager, restart with the smallest set possible that still lets you see and read from your CD-ROMs. Installing with a minimum extension set will assure you of the best installation results. 4) The 4 substitution font files in the font folder of your System Folder are broken (Adobe Sans MM, Adobe Serif MM, AdobeSanMM, AdobeSerMM). Solution: Remove them then reinstall the Acrobat Reader (as explained in 3). 5) There is a quirk that can happen where the desktop file gets corrupted and Acrobat cannot find certain fonts. Solution: rebuild the desktop file (i.e., Restart with option and command keys down until a box appears asking if you wish to rebuild your desktop). 6) Your Acrobat application fails to run (you may get a Type 2 memory error) and you are using version 4. Solution: try removing and discarding into the trash a file called "AdobeFnt.lst" found in the Fonts folder in the System Folder. It can become corrupt. A new file will be created automatically. 7) Some users have reported problems with poorly written Control Strip modules creating conflicts with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Solution: try turning off Control Strip in your Extensions Manager and see if the issue disappears. If it does, try removing the non-Apple Control Strips from the "Control Strip Modules" folder in the System Folder. With a bit of trial and error you will find the Module that is failing. Remove it and replace it with an update.
